Scholarships

Creating a named scholarship. Over 95% of UC students receive some form of financial aid.  You can help by establishing a named scholarship in one of two ways:

  • Endowed scholarships may be established in the name of the donor(s), or as a memorial to a faculty member, friend, or family member. Some donors endow a scholarship outright; others spread the gift over a period of up to five years. Payments are set aside for the scholarship and it is considered “in progress” until the fund reaches $50,000.  Once the fund reaches endowment level, the University invests the funds and only the interest income, or a portion of it, is awarded to a student or students each year.  The University of Charleston has over 180 permanently endowed scholarships, which provide a permanent source of scholarship aid for our students.
  • Annually funded named scholarships may be created for a minimum gift of $5,000 per year for at least five years ($25,000).  Contributions received from the donor are distributed directly to one or more students each year.

Meet the beneficiary of your gift. Each year, the University hosts an event designed to bring scholarship donors and scholarship recipients together. Our donors enjoy seeing the effects their gifts have had on the lives of our students, and our students appreciate the opportunity to say, “Thank you.”
