Michael G. O’Neil received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC.  Before joining the University of Charleston School of Pharmacy in May 2007, he was a Critical Care Pharmacy Specialist for 19 years, with the last 10 years in the state of West Virginia.  With an emphasis on acute care practice, Dr. O’Neil has developed and implemented a variety of clinical pharmacy services and pharmacy residency programs.  He has served as Clinical Specialist Coordinator and Pharmacy Residency Director at several large West Virginia medical institutions.

For over 15 years, Dr. O’Neil has served as consultant and expert witness for the state and federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), as well as several local law enforcement agencies.  He also is a consultant for the West Virginia Bureau of Criminal Investigation (WVBCI).  Dr. O’Neil currently serves as the Executive Director for the West Virginia Pharmacist Recovery Network (WVPRN).  

Dr. O’Neil’s areas of interests include:

  • Facilitating the application of classroom and didactic instruction to the patient at the bedside
  • Developing pharmacy residency programs in a variety of settings
  • Promoting education and prevention of prescription drug diversion and substance abuse
