Dr. Nina Zivanovic received her MD from Belgrade University School of Medicine in Belgrade, Serbia. She worked four years as a physician in her native Serbia before starting her doctoral studies at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB), Galveston, TX, in the Pharmacology and Toxicology program. While in her doctorate program, Dr. Zivanovic received the Dean's Award for Academic Excellence. After receiving her PhD, she completed postdoctoral training programs at UTMB and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, TX. While at UTMB, Dr. Zivanovic gained teaching experience in anatomy & physiology, pharmacology and microbiology in the School of Allied Health Sciences, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and School of Medicine.
Since starting her tenure with the University of Charleston School of Pharmacy, Dr. Zivanovic has been involved in team teaching courses such as Pharmacology, Pathophysiology, Pharmacokinetics, and Integrated Pharmaceutical Care and Sciences Modules (IPC&S Modules). She is also a PBL (Problem-Based Learning) facilitator for IPC&S Lab II. In 2008, she was the recipient of the University of Charleston School of Pharmacy Teacher of the Year Award.
Dr. Zivanovic's research interests include examining interactions between the endocrine and the central nervous systems, specifically steroid hormones and the serotonin system in the brain. In 2008, her project "Estrogen regulation of serotonin transporter and serotonin autoreceptors in vitro" was funded by the West Virginia IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (WV-INBRE) Pilot Grant. Her research has resulted in six publications in peer-reviewed journals, as well as several presentations at national meetings.
